First Night Monterey - Paddle- and Lei-Making Workshops

On December 31, 2002, members of the Academy of Hawaiian Arts performed at First Night Monterey. The photos on this and the following pages document the preparations for the event, which began months in advance, as well as the performance itself. Here, Academy students attend two workshops, where they construct their dance paddles and leis for the show. Click on the thumbnails to enlarge.

AHA girls proudly display a newly glued paddle. But, uh-oh, there aren't enough clamps for everyone's paddles while the glue is drying. Solution:...

... Portagee clamps.

Once the glue is dry, the paddles are stained.
Maile stains her paddle.
The finished product.
At the lei-making workshop, everyone sorts through bags of Spanish moss.
The moss is formed into the lei shape.
Then a kukui nut lei is twined around the moss.
